paper ball ornament

my dear friend linda (think: “in the making design”) had this pattern available to purchase once upon a time. 

(sniff..  sniff…)

so I had to make due, and figure one out with these papers, that I am, again, obsessed with!

 

so I started out, using my cricut and using some bad words, cutting 3 inch circles.  linda suggests starting with 2 inch guys, but I wanted a big guy.  so I went three inches.

you need 20 circles.  twenty.

after you have your circles all cut out, or punched, then you start to score.  the trick is to score an equilateral triangle, perfectly in the middle of the circle, with the three points touching the edges of the circle.

I would not/could not do this without my martha stewart scoring board.

use your bone folder to make those creases SHARP.  this makes things easier later on.

now there are a few tricks to getting those darn equilateral triangles the right size for your circle guys.  you need your triangle to be about 1/2 inch smaller than your circle.  so my triangle for my 3 inch guy was 2 1/2 inches, but the triangle for my 2 inch circle was 1 3/4 inches.  see, no exact math, but wikipedia did help out, a lot.  and now I feel guilty about not donating to their cause…

linda had an awesome template that printed right out on her “be merry” papers, but like I said before,  that was once upon a time.  (why did she have to retire?  well, I really know why..  totally support and love your guts linda, just still a little sad.)

so I guess I will just make one…

so now you have 20 cute little cut and scored circles…  or maybe 10?  why did I take that picture?

next step is to start gluing.  I like tombow mono multi liquid glue.  LOVE IT!!

start with five cut and scored circles for the top, and five more for the bottom.

you will glue them so the points all go to the middle.  it will look kinda like a lid.

(and eating white chocolate peppermint m&ms seems to help out too..)

do this for the top and bottom, and then set them aside.

you will take the remaining 10 cut and scored circles, and start gluing them to each other so it makes a band of sorts.

put glue on your tabs on one side of the band, and attach the top, then do the same for the bottom.

cute, right?

you can always add a bit or ribbon or string so you can hang them if desired.

I know I am not done making these.  pretty sure they will be filler everywhere around my house!

my cute little trees.

for these guys, I bought styrofoam cones from the craft store (used my app for some pretty awesome coupons!!), and also purchased some sheet moss.

now let me tell you how much I love this stuff!! 

I love it!!!

it is so much fun to work with.  while it is a bit messy, it is not nearly as messy as loose moss.  not nearly I tell you!!  I have used it a few times.   Making my own moss balls, and let’s not forget my moss covered “P”.

I covered the cones with the moss, gluing with my hot glue gun, trimming as I went.

after they were all covered with the moss, I used some other items from my stash to liven them up a bit.  I used some small, “i-top” brads (LOVE my i-top!!),  papers from the “winter wonderland” paper collection by heidi swapp + jessica sprague, small silver ric-rac, some decorative upholstery nails..

and some enamel paint.

one little tree, I left the upholstery nails silver, but on my taller tree next to the canvas, and the smaller one on my computer desk, I painted the upholstery nails with the enamel paint.  I simply painted it on, and let them dry.  I didn’t bake them or anything, although that is what this paint is meant for.

and these are the little “ornaments” that were made with the “i-top”.

the best way to describe this tool is that it is like a button cover kit you would use for sewing.  same concept, you just get a brad back instead of a looped button back.

pretty easy to use, and I have used it on so many things!!

the last little tree with the small ric-rac, I used straight pins to attach the ric-rac securely to the tree.

I just gotta say, it’s a little merry around here!

a little in love…

or maybe obsessed is the more appropriate word?

with this paper:

yes, “obsessed”.

I started this project LAST YEAR.  does that give you any indication as to what life is like here?  okay, okay, I kind of like to stick to working on projects in their proper season..  it just seems to work out better that way for me.  so I left it for, well, last week.

but it was just the thing to get me in the mood for christmas!

it all started, last year, when I decided to move around the furniture in the house.  this table was relocated from the entryway, to the end of our little hallway.  but above the table, smack in the middle of the wall, was a very ill-placed light switch. 

yes, that is what I call it.  now, I realize why the light switch is there, so a person, coming out of a bedroom door or the bathroom, would both be able to access it easily, but seriously?  right where it was?  I have two other switches to control these same lights, by the way.  so this one was going to get covered. 

I even googled:  “ill-placed light switch” and found some solutions, but this one hit me quicker. 

a gallery-wrapped canvas.  it’s deep enough to cover that light switch, but also serves a pretty fun purpose.

we have an everyday canvas with a line from a favorite song, but I wanted a fun one for Christmas.

I made one with this same movie quote last year, but decided quickly after I finished it (which was on the 23rd of december), that I hated it.  the font was all wrong.  the lettering slanted downward, slowly, and nobody else seemed to notice, until I pointed it out.  so this year, I re-painted it, and redid the lettering. 

I can admit, while cutting out the stencil with my cricut, I said a few bad words, but that situation will soon be remedied…

I WON A PORTRAIT!!!!!

I love this quote…  I even bought a shirt that says it.

I had to have this little pennant banner draped across the top.

and loved it so much I added it to my latest favorite thrifty find, my $2 window.

(sidenote:  “logical lynnie” thinks my window is stupid.  she claims it was a waste of my money.  I think it’s dumb that they didn’t put my kitchen sink at a wall where there could be a window.  seriously, the things they should have consulted me on when they were building this house, even though it wasn’t mine, then.  I would much rather look out of a window than at a wall.  but “logical lynnie” says:  “mom, you are looking at a wall still…  you wasted $2.”)

and then the same pennant banner HAD to be added to my “joy to the world” art.

this frame has another everyday version.  the tidbit of a song lyric that goes here is from cat stevens.  “oooh baby, baby, it’s a wild world.”  I happen to love it.  no one else seems to really. 

(and by “no one”, I mean merrill.  so whatever.)

these trees got some imaginesce “i-top” brads, made with more of that darling paper, as ornaments.

and then there are the paper balls that I also happen to be overly obsessed with.  love my pinecones + glitter. 

(I have threatened my children with their very lives if they mess with these..)

can anybody guess what is in the white bowl there?

(that is all that I have been thinking/talking about on instagram, I swear it!!)

then, there’s my gordman’s globe, awesome find, and my “hooter” from scentsy.  I think he was july’s warmer of the month, I knew he had to come and live here as soon as I saw him.  isn’t he cute?

so we have a challenge for ffa, which has nothing to do with animals or growing edible stuff, but has everything to do with helping you find your style and implement it.

so the only reason why I do this, is because mandi told me to, and I like her, like, a lot, so I will do it for her.

before I go on, before you do as well, please take into account that this room of mine is not cute.  you might want to grab a bucket or a garbage can, a large bowl perhaps?  you might vomit at the sheer ugliness of this here room.

I was hoping that it would not come to this, but really, you have to see the before to appreciate the after.

- they are sooc (straight out of camera).

- the white balance hasn’t even been corrected.

- I am not watermarking them.  I don’t want anyone to be able to prove that this room belongs to me.

- I am now considering blurring the face of the child in these pictures, just so the authorities don’t come and take her out of a home that is obviously so bland and boring.

- they are so awful, I tagged and labeled them “ugly room”.

(but really!!  it’s just the one room..  I will prove that I have cuteness in this house!!)

oh, and I didn’t really bother to “straighten up” because, really, like anything can help this?

here goes..

I know, I apologize.  this is not what you needed to see today.

I hope you didn’t get any vomit on your keyboard.

(those are difficult to clean.)

so here’s the rundown:

- paint.  maybe if I tell the guy I am married to that that is all I want for mother’s day, then I can get it soon-ish?  I mean, I was putting it off, what with the water heater/sprinkling system/pirate-eyed daughter fiasco going down.  I am still debating on stenciling one wall.  not sure.  not sure at all about that.

- see that drab, plain, ugly curtain?  (if that is what you want to call it.)  it is thumbtacked to the wall.  it is also a necessity in this here sleep-space.  this window is south-facing, so we get lots ‘o light in here, we don’t want it.  it also helps to muffle the neighbor’s annoying dog.  I want to punch either the owner, or the dog in the face most days.  so basically, I need to get some attractive fabric (and that can’t be that hard to improve upon this situation) to make into curtains, with blackout liner of course.

- stuff for my walls.  you know, to make them look attractive and accessorized and junk.

- new headboard, and stat!!  I have had my eye on a few options of diy upholstered headboards.  this one, the one in that picture you don’t want to look at again, is a bookcase headboard.  while my husband loves it, and while I am thankful we have had it for 12 years, and while I am looking for some positivity, I am thankful for my thoughtful mother-in-law who gifted us this whole bedroom set as a wedding gift, it reminds me of my grandparents.  they always had a bookcase headboard.  I feel like I should have a gigantic bottle of excedrin hiding in one of the cubbies.

- new bedding.  that should be obvious.

- re-paint the dresser?

- I would love new nightstands.  one that is more “him” and one that is more “her”?

- heck, while I am dreaming, how’s about a king sized bed?

- then there’s the area against the wall in the top picture, you know, the one you started dry-heaving when you saw it?  yeah, that is a desk.  it really didn’t have a home anywhere else in the house, so it got stuck in our huge room. “we have the room for it…”  biggest mistake of my life.  it has turned into a catch all.  I need storage for my books, cause I kinda love to read.  oh, and that chair?  (the object that has the husband’s clothing piled-up on?  yeah, it’s under there…)  I just want to get rid of it so merrill will have to buck up and put his crap away.

(that sounded mean…  but it’s really just these pictures are putting me in a bad mood, I swear.)

- the light.  I loathe that light.  it’s too fancy?  I just don’t like it.

I could go on, but that would be like, a lot of stuff.

so we’ll just start here.

beautifying the front porch.

the following picture is brought to you, with special thanks to my ridiculousness/stupidity….

I wanted this picture to be all sorts of dramatical, so I planned to take it at night.

well, I also needed to be level with the porch, so that required a stool..

and well, my prime lens was the best option to get the most light without using a flash, so I had to be farther way, like, in the middle of the lawn.

so there I was, looking pretty ridiculous, standing on a kitchen stool, in the middle of my front lawn, late-ish one night.

(see, I thought I was smart doing it later, like less cars, but no.  not so much less in the traffic area.)

I spent one monday afternoon, hitting the town with my two best short sidekicks, trying to find the perfect flowers for the porch, that gets mostly shade, a teeny-tiny bit of sun, not much at all.  my short little sidekicks were pretty good at spotting the “part sun” and “shade” symbols on the various flowers and plants by the end of the day.

they were also very good at listening to me when we went into the scariest thrift store that I like to visit, but only when I am feeling exceptionally brave (or desperate).

I told them that they were not to leave my side, touch anything, or say a word about what the place smelled like, until we were back in the safety of our car. 

we came out successful in all areas.

we found our rickety (but not too rickety) old stool that was perfect for some black paint and roughing up.

the last thing I needed was to have a giant “p” on my door.

(and depending on where your mind is at the moment, that sentence sounds kinda gross.)

off to joann’s we went, and it is a mess there!  (just a heads up to anyone in my hood.) I mean, it’s all exciting and junk, but it’s kinda scary and gross all at the same time.  my feelings on the matter are quite obviously mixed.

we made our way through the crazy place, got our big “p”, and some moss.

now before you go shaking your head, saying, “what a mess that must have been.  was it really worth it?”  let me tell you about sheet moss.  it is moss that comes in a…  get this..  SHEET!

it is quite amazing, still a little messy, but amazing none-the-less.

I used my trusty and most favorite (and only) hot glue gun, to attach the moss first to the front of the letter, then trimmed the edges, and then to the sides, trimming and piecing all the way around until everything but the back was covered.  the nice thing about this stuff is, there are no seams.

pretty sweet.

and it’s lovely and green, and I figure it can live on the front door for quite a while.

some talk about ceilings.

did you know that your ceiling is your fifth wall?
so i have been told (or read, rather) as i have researched the answer to the burning question i have:
do i paint my ceilings white, or the same color as my walls?
i have even polled some of my fav diy bloggers and have their opion on the matter.
you see, i already know MY answer to this question, it's just that merrill's answer is not the same as mine, and i am trying to prove to him that i am right, and therefore, our ceilings should be the way i think they should be.
i do not want to admit how much time i have put forth towards this effort.  that is incalculable at the moment.
but, no fear.  it (the painting of ceilings or any other surface in this house) will not be taking place any time in the near future (i.e. tomorrow).
for now, we have drama.
drama of the homeowner type.
- a water heater that needs to be replaced (and is on order).
- a sprinkling system that is on the fritz, not that we NEED to use it NOW, but we do need to get it fixed before we need it.
- and a little girl who wants to continually close her left eye.  i am wondering if this child has a misalignment or something of the sort.  still, not fun.
so while i would LOVE to spend money on fun paint to make our bedroom not so blah, i will abstain, and take care of what needs to be taken care of.
fun will just have to wait.
ooohhh!!  oooohhhh!!  i did have fun though.  i beautified my porch.

this is challenge #2 for our ffa club, and I was excited to dive right in.

I went to Homegoods site to take their quiz, totally doubtful that they could put my style in a description that makes sense.

after answering a few easy questions, they gave me my results:

there are so many points that are spot on, I was kind of astonished that there really isn’t anything that isn’t me in that description. 

- yes, I want my home to be welcoming and comfortable!  I want people to feel how happy we are here.

- I am not flighty or frilly.  I hate trends (usually).  I will be the last person to hop on the color blocking trend, I was (and still am) avoiding trends like the plague.

- and what’s not to say about organized?  that is how I NEED my home to be.

(and pretty sure that is how I described my own style in my first ffa post.) 

the only thing that I can say I don’t say “ahhhh..  yes!” to, are my “happy home colors”.

given, I did purposefully paint my dining room (at the old house) in a rusty orange color called “spiced cider”, and I loved it.  up until just a few months ago, I had a wall in our family room a similar orange.  I really do love the color, and I still have accents in that color, but I just can’t have it on my walls.  as petty as it may sound, it clashed with my christmas tree.

so I started thinking about this a little further, and decided that merrill needed to take this quiz.  you know, so we could make our bedroom “our” bedroom.

(I could use the excuse that I am at home more than he is, and therefore my style should trump his, but I really do want him to feel like our home is his too..  like I want him to want to be here and such..)

giving him the quiz was kind of comical, what with some of the questions and all, but his results are pretty darn accurate.

I know I have been.

so let me explain somethings to you.

1) “ffa” doesn’t stand for what you think it stands for.  it stands for “fearlessly finding awesome”.

b) it’s a club of sorts.

III.) I am hoping it will help me to un-funkify my bedroom.

(as well as other areas in my home.)

there is this blog, that I have happened to love for quite a while now.  I just love this chick’s attitude.  her personality rocks, and what’s best is that she is real.  she shares her incredible talents and gained knowledge (don’t you love it when people don’t keep cool ideas to themselves?) but she also shares bits of her real life.  I think that is what has attached her to me in a very irreversible way.

well, that and her sense of humor.

so usually you join a club because the club is based on something you enjoy doing or something you want to enjoy doing, or learn more about, or if you just need help in that particular area.  the latter is the reason I joined.

now our first assignment is “catch a dream”, we are to put into words what we want our home to feel like.

- organized.

- fun.

- peaceful.

I guess that the first thing listed totally describes me.

but in no way do I want my home to be a stack of blocky shelves stacked with boxes all labeled very uniformly with a label maker.

dude, I said I wanted it to be fun.

I attempted to hunt around the interwebs (mostly the pinterest) to find pictures that would define how I want things to be around these parts and for real, I started to get waaaaay ahead of myself.

baby steps.

for real.

so for now, no pix.

and for now, I will focus on my bedroom.

thing is, I want my bedroom to embody all the aforementioned traits, but I want it to be secksy as well.

it is so not any of those things right now.

(I could show you, but that would just be beyond comical.)

I am not sure I would even post a picture if it was assigned to us in one of our club meetings.

it’s that bad.

thing is, at our old house (as in the place we lived about three years ago) everything had an order to it, everything had it’s place.  we had worked our butts off and made that little home OUR home, and I loved every area in it. (well, except for two of the bathrooms.  they still needed an intervention.)  our bedroom was shoved to the last item on the list to be re-habilitated and that kind of sucked, but I was able to narrow down the vast list of what I thought I wanted, to what I really wanted by the time we got to that room.  and I got it all put together.  it was a space that we loved.

and then, we moved.

everything got shuffled and re-organized.

don’t get me wrong, it was a lot of fun.  I love our house.  it just isn’t ours.  yet.  I mean, it is “ours” it just doesn’t feel like “us”.

I am slowly trying to get things to a point where they function for me (uh..  I mean us.) to where life just kind of flows and things make sense.

so I guess that is where the organization being #1 comes in.

I could give  quite the descriptive list of things that I would change in/about my house now, but that would be lengthy, and merrill would roll his eyes and then he might roll them too much or too far back that he might fall over and lose consciousness.

that could be scary.

(he’s that enamored with my dreams for this place.)

so I won’t.

and that is also why I have decided to start with our bedroom, put all the other stuff that will likely not happen for a very long time, on the back-burner and get to this space that drives me batty.

I deserve a pretty place to lay my head, don’t i?

so I lied about the picture bit, because I do have some inspiration for this area of mine (and merrill’s)…

I want my base colors to be neutral (thinking “revere pewter” for the walls), but want some pops of color.  I just want to make it easy for when I need to change things up a bit.

and I love this technique on the wall.

 

the used an eggshell for the majority of the wall, and a high gloss for the stenciled part.  I love the way it looks.

like my husband is going to go for a big bunch of ruffles on his bed?

yeah, I didn’t think so.

For a number of reasons..

I finished this project the other day:

Really enjoying playing with paper again.

It is also quite fun to make a mess, like I did sanding the edges of the fold-over flaps.  That was fun!

I used my Circut “Storybook” cartridge for the white marquee layer, and my “Doodley-Doo” cartridge for the lettering.  I couldn’t find a clover anywhere that I was happy with, so I made my own!

Today is another designer spotlight at Jessica Sprague, and if you enjoy the hybrid fun as much as I do, then you are in store for more fun!

Elle is one of the first designers I was set up to work with and her products are darling!  On top of that, they are easy.

Valentine’s Revisited.

As I began taking down my Valentine’s decorations, I realized that I never posted the fun stuff that we did here this year for the (card company/candy maker)holiday.
I planned on changing up the decorations last year, but never quite got around to making all the things I wanted to.
I bought paper at Heartland, that had me singing Beatles songs.  The name of the line “Love me do”, something that Merrill says all the time, especially when he is tired/worn down.
I love the colors.  So non-traditional.
And then there’s that turqois-ey/teal-ey color I so love…

Call me crazy, but I would really love to paint a piece of furniture in this color.
A friend and I had a cookie making day..  we made lots of them.
 
We even got more artsy than usual with the decorating.


Another addition this year was this banner.  Inspired by the same paper line and color scheme.  I dreamed about it at night.

But I knew it needed something more.. 
Tissue paper balls.
(And some other things that I never got to, but I probably would have if I just knew when to stop!!)
These are so fun to make!
(Now I know that I am not the first, and I am also aware that they have been around for a while now, but c’mon..  in these colors?  I had to share..)
I also learned a few tricks that make the whole process a lot easier.
(Those will come in another post, perhaps?)
But a tip for now: Target has the funnest colors right now..  the turquoise is in, and the “wish” color of blue (light blueish-greenish) is in the baby gift wrapping area along with the yellow.

Last but not least, and one of my favorite parts of our day were these bottles:

I got all excited watching History channel’s program on soda, they showed Jones soda company.  Did you know that you can go to their website and order their soda in bottles with YOUR picture on the label?!
Isn’t that so cool?
I thought so…  until I saw the attached price tag.
Pair that with the idea of my kiddos getting a 6 pack a piece, thinking that they need to drink it all that night, then the sugar high that would follow…  I so don’t need that.
So I did it my way.  I changed it up a bit, not being able to find the clear bottles with the fun red soda..  (sniff) so I kept the colors simple.
I went and bought my own little 4-pack of rootbeer, and printed off my own labels, using double-stick tape to hold it all together.
The girls loved them.
You can too!  Here’s the PSD template so you can make your own.  Just clip down the picture(s) you want to use (Control G my friends..  Control G..), print off on regular copy paper and stick away!
I am thinking of doing another version of these, making my custom nutrition label or something fun like that. 
With a little adjusting of the text, I think they would be a blast for a shower (be it baby or bridal) or a birthday party.

My goal this year was to be ahead preparation-wise by one month.  This has helped me with my December decor!
One buck people!

I printed-off the goodness, cut, rounded corners and inked away while my glitter-edged letters were drying.  Punched holes, added hole reinforcers (inked with the same ink), added more sparkle by adding sticky rhinestones to the little dips in the letters, then put it all together using Craft Glue Dots.  I strung it up using twill ribbon. 
Cute, I know!
Supplies:
-Elle’s studio “Merry Christmas” banner.
-Martha Stewart is the bomb!  I used her glitter glue and “sterling” microfine glitter on these babies.
-I used Stazon “Brown Timber” ink.
-Craft Glue Dots placed on 3 points on top and bottom and  one on either side middle.  Seriously, get 2 boxes.
-Rhinestones.
-Ribbon of your choice.
-Hole reinforcers (optional).
-scissors, hole punch, and corner rounder
