new project life “seafoam” edition.

I have already started mentally compiling my list of goals for the year 2013.

one of those goals is to actually remember to write 2013, not 2012, and when I do write 2012, to not say crap.

another goal is to start project life.

I (taking a deep breath…) am not caught up on all of my scrapbooking.

(huge exhale.)

I know.

it is like a huge sin for me to not be caught up.

I am not sure if I can even admit just how far behind I am….

but I can say this:

while searching for a couple of specific pictures last week,  I was brought to a realization:  there are a lot (like A LOT) of pictures that have just been left for my hard drive to enjoy.  there are moments captured that I forgot about.  these need to be out and enjoyed.

project life is so crazy cool, and there are many of my friends who inspire me with their project life layouts.  I just need to start.

there are a few blog posts, even vlogs out there, that have inspired me further, and even reaffirmed my decision, that this is what I need to do.

you can rest assured, that I have a pinboard started for all things project life.  what would I do without pinterest?  I mean, really?!

pictures are already being organized on the hard drive…

excitement abounds!!

so, diving in head first, here is one for you, with the most brand-spanking new edition of a project life kit at that!!!

a year of no yelling: how I did it.

I thought it was funny, that the year mark fell on ashley’s baptism day. for anyone who has had a special event of this magnitude take place, you know that that day is stressful! if you make it through without yelling, emotional breakdowns, or threats on another’s life, then you have succeeded.

well, I made it!

let’s catalog the events that took place this past year, that I managed to not yell through, shall we?

- one trip to disneyland.  (this was a trial.)

- two lagoon trips.

- 3 birthdays.  (and all the prep work and EXCITEMENT!!  from the girls.)

- one summer, kinda stacked with chores, and the arguments that inevitably follow.

- countless nights of homework.  need I say more?

- countless nights of little girls getting out of their own beds, and coming to mine.

- one month of merrill being gone (gone two weeks at a time).

- one lake powell trip.

- many, many pictures taken.

- a number of sacrament meetings.  (oh, you know what I am talking about?)

how did I do it?

well, let me tell you that I have set this goal many times.  I was just never fully committed, or desired the change bad enough, I guess.  it was ashley’s birthday last year, and I can tell you that she is my kid who knows how to push buttons, and I felt so bad at the end of that day.  I felt like she was yelled at more than anything that day.  that is not how it should have been that day, or any other.

I got out of the house to play volleyball, and afterward, had quite the heart to heart with my best friend.  I know that my change of heart came at the right time when she started to share information with me from a class she had been to that night.

it was an answered prayer.

some of the things that were discussed at her class were just the helps I needed, some tips that would get me going the way I wanted to go.

- talk low and slow.  (I think I am scarier when I do this than when I yell.)

- set reasonable punishments, and when you lay out a punishment/consequence, stick with it.

- take deep breaths.  (even if you pass out.)

sometimes, I was talking so low and so slow, my teeth were gritted so tight, I thought they would never part again.  but the girls HAD to listen, HAD to pay attention, or else they wouldn’t be able to hear.

the consequence thing was kind of hard at first, I wanted to throw out the scariest possible consequence just to scare them into obeying, but realizing that they would call my bluff, I had to learn to stop, think, sometimes ponder it for the night, and then set a consequence that would be both effective and reasonable.

a great example was a sacrament meeting when I was single parenting it up, and ashley was pushing my buttons.  I told her that if she kept it up, we would have to move to the foyer,  the way she was behaving was not appropriate for the chapel, and that it would not be good.  well, we moved out to the foyer, and it wasn’t good.  I told her that she would have her prized possessions repossessed, all that would be left to her in her room would be her bed, her clothes, and her bedding.

blaming my older brother for some of her personality traits, she got real smart-ass like, and asked, “oh yeah?  will you take my light?  will you take my door?  will you take my carpet…”  and that was when I started to drag her out of the church, taking those deep breaths all along the way.

once we were home, I sat her on the stairs in the entryway, and explained to her what she had done, what I had told her would be her punishment, and then how she kept on.

she sat there and watched as I moved EVERYTHING out of her room.

she was left with a bed with her bedding, a nightstand and lamp, an empty bookshelf, a mirror on her wall, and her clothes.

once she saw that I was serious, the tears began.  after letting her have a time out in her very empty room, we laid out a plan for how she could earn her belongings back.  every day, she had the opportunity to earn back 3 things: 1) if she were obedient getting ready for school and stayed on task.  2) coming home and getting homework done without complaint.  and 3) getting ready for bed and having a clean room.  some days were really good, and I was generous and would let her get an item or two more than the three, some days she was only allowed to pick out one.  that first night, she only got to pick out one item instead of the two we had talked about.  that was a hard night for her, she chose a stuffed animal over her cd player.  she learned pretty quickly that if something were important to her, she had better do her part to have what she wanted.

she has finally earned back all of her belongings. :)

but most of all, I prayed.  every day and night I would pray for help, and give a prayer of gratitude for how far I had come.

I decided that I didn’t want my home to feel the way it did anymore, I wanted my children to listen to me, instead of zone me out again because I was yelling again.  I wanted to better my relationship with them.  our home has been a happier place, when merrill comes home there isn’t such a dark cloud (most of the time).

but mostly, I wanted to be the kind of parent that my heavenly father would want me to be.  he never yells at me, I am sure he wants to sometimes, but his ways are better, and they do not include anger and yelling.

another good “side effect” of this change, is that my kids listen to me when I do yell.  like, when I was painting peyton’s room, she started to back into a wet wall, and when I yelled her name, she listened!  she ran to me, instead of away from me, like she would have.  another time as we were all leaving a store, walking through the parking lot, like a mother duck with her ducklings in tow, a car was coming too fast, and I yelled for them to run, and guess what, they listened.

I am so happy I made this change.

it has been a great year!

the big confession.

I suck at blogging.

I suck at keeping up on anything that I really enjoy doing just for me.

I blame it on my children.  the number I have, their ages.  the fact that they go to school.  (well, the majority of them anyway.)  that they eat, dirty their clothes..

I wish someone would have warned me about the consequences of my choice to birth three of these time vacuums.

cooking?

cleaning?

laundry?

playing?!

reading books?!

homework?!?!

sheesh.

it’s a good thing I love them.

all joking aside, I wouldn’t give up being a mother for anything.  not even sugar or diet coke.  (see, totally serious now.)

I remember well enduring those horrible teenage years.  dating.  that stupid game of dating!  I never want to go back to that circus..  wishing that I could be grown and married already, have a family and home of my own.  *sigh*  life was going to be so much easier when I got to that point.

truth is, many days, I wish my biggest stress was a spelling test or mastering a cursive “r”.  dealing with a total punk on a date?  piece of cake.

there are many days when I look at the day ahead, and get excited for bedtime.

there seems to be a never-ending list of things that need to be done, things that I want to do, and things that I should do.

guess what?  I never get it all done.

there are days when I go to bed, feeling like I have failed, didn’t do all that I possibly could do that day.  I even compare what I do/have done, to what other moms and women do in the course of their day.  did you know that comparing is stupid?  like, really.  it is bad.  you shouldn’t do it, and it always makes you feel bad.

did I already mention that it’s stupid?

I found this quote on pinterest, and it will be my mantra for the next little while.

comparison poster copy

a sister in our ward spoke in sacrament meeting a couple of weeks ago, and her talk was an answer to my prayers.

she likened our lives to a triathlon.  there are many participants of different ages and differing competitive brackets, and they all race a different race.  their swim/bike/run might be longer or shorter than yours.  they might have signed-up for a different race complete with different distances than you.  you might start out your swim with one group of people, end up swimming with another group of people, and start your bike race with an entirely new group of people.  ride the bike portion with people you’ve never seen before, finish with another bunch, only to run with an entirely different group.

dude, you can’t compare your race to any of theirs.  they are not running the same race that you are.  yeah, that 80 year old lady, she isn’t running the same race you are.  neither is the 22 year old guy with endless energy.

I learned an invaluable lesson:  some people are able to do certain things with their life, with their time, right now.  they are different that what I can do, right now.  while those things would be good, no doubt beneficial, it is not my season for those things.  I cannot go to the temple everyday, not even once a week right now.  someday, when everyone is in school, I can do that!  while I would love to be all caught up on my scrapbooks, instead of stuck in 2008, I don’t have the time to dedicate to that.  sure, I could if I chose to, and that would mean choosing to neglect other things that really need to be done.  I would love to have a pre-baby body (shallow, I know), and realize that that could take hours out of everyday if I went as gung-ho as that pursuit would necessitate; but I would much rather spend my time, creating an environment that encourages health and happiness for my whole family.  I would rather spend time with peyton, teaching and helping her throughout our time together at home, instead of spending hours working out.  now don’t get me wrong, I exercise, occasionally…  just not hours at a time, or very consistently for that matter.

maybe one day, when all the kiddos are at school, when they don’t require as much “hands on” attention, I will have some time to do some of these things that I am interested in.  I am not complaining.  I get to do things that I like to do now, it’s not all work and no play over here.  (I am not insane, yet.)  there just seems to be a growing list of things I would like to learn/do/improve.

so while I don’t update the happenings at this house very often on this here blog, you can be sure that it is for a much more worthwhile cause.  (like helping a third grader with math homework?)

and while I may not visit some of my most favored areas of the internets, it is most likely for the same reasons.  thing is, that is one of my favorite relaxing activities.  I love to see what my friends and family are up to.  I like to see what is being created, I like being inspired.  (I don’t like so much getting inspired and not having the time to create..  that bugs.)

I am just going to try to keep on being the best wife/mother/friend/comedian that I can be.  and I hope that I will become a master at time management so I can do all the things I enjoy.

(without the aid of obscene amounts of caffeine or illegal drugs.)

one of those “assess and improve” times.

last year (feels weird to type that out), I did some assessing, and decided to make some changes.  now this happened to be one of those times when I saw something wasn’t working and I needed to fix it, instead of waiting and making it a new year’s resolution (bleh!), I made it a goal right then and there.

now, I cannot take full credit for this change.  someone who I am very blessed to know and have in my life, was inspired to share some information with me, and that information was just what I needed to hear at just the right time.

three girls is something that I never dreamed I would have to deal with.  for some reason, I thought I would have boys.  maybe one girl, after all, that pattern seemed to work out pretty awesomely for my mom and dad.  I never really got along with girls.  I found them to be a little too dramatic and catty for my taste.  I got along just fine with boys, and my brothers were my best friends.  if I had the choice, to play with a girl friend in my neighborhood, or to hang out and play g.i. joes with my brothers, I would pick playing with my brothers.

don’t get me wrong, I enjoy being a girl, I like to do some girlie things, but to be surrounded by girls?  not exactly something I thought I could handle.

so you might be able to imagine the shock when I was told I was having a girl the first time around.  I was so sure little lynn was going to be a boy.  (I still have little boy clothes with tags on them, in my cedar chest, that is how certain I was that I was going to have boys.)  then, there came ashley.  I was hoping for a boy, because I was freaked out (!!!) about having a second girl.  how would a mother daughter-daughter relationship work out with two girls?!  but we adapted, and really couldn’t picture life any other way.  the fact that peyton was yet another girl, seemed to come as no surprise.  if we were to have one more (just one more merrill?!?) we would most definitely want another girl.  we have a system established here.

but as the years have come and gone, the drama has seemed to increase.  life progressing certainly doesn’t help in that area.  with progression came school, homework, extra-curricular activities, friends, different personalities developing, and lots of emotion associated with them all.

now, I’ve always known that I take after my dad more than I do my mom, so it seemed as though the patience thing just wasn’t in me.  oh, I tried, and usually failed miserably by the end of the day.  I prayed, I fasted, how I tried!!!

this last year, it seemed that the volume to life in our home was always set to yell, and I was the one yelling.  I hated it.

again, there were the attempts to change, but I always fell to my old ways, not that it worked and provided the results I desired.  I think the girls became experts at ignoring me which only made me yell louder.

I was not the kind of mother I wanted to be.

it was the day after ashley’s birthday.  I went out to play volleyball with friends and have some much needed time out of the house.  I was feeling like a horrible mom.  there was a constant prayer in my head and in my heart, pleading to be better, to find something that would help me.

that is where my inspired friend comes in.

sometimes, after a physically exerting game of volleyball (hahaha…), we would leave and go get ourselves a cold treat.  (frosties at wendy’s are the best.  try a chocolate frosty float with orange soda.  really.  you are welcome.)  that night, we were having our treat, talking about things that were going on in our lives, doing what good friends do best, listening and supporting.  she had just attended a parenting conference and was telling me about some of the techniques they discussed.  this was what I needed to hear.

no yelling.  speak slow and low.  don’t toss out punishments or consequences with anger or emotion, think about them for a while.  find the best, fool-proof one and stick to it!  let consequences happen.  don’t rescue your kids.  take deep breaths.  lots of deep breaths.

so many more things were said, and it was just what I needed.

I promised myself that from that point on I would not yell at my girls.

I haven’t yelled (out of anger) since that day.  That was three months ago.

the girls listen to me now.  they take me more seriously, because I sound sane.

I have yelled, to call them to dinner, stuff like that, but never out of anger.  when I yell for those things, they listen to me!!  I get a response!

while I was painting peyton’s room, she was admiring my handiwork and backed-up in awe towards the wet wall.  when I yelled her name, to get her attention, so she wouldn’t pinkify her clothes, she ran to me.  see, they listen now that yelling isn’t a part of their everyday existence.

what is even more amazing to me, is how easy it has been.  yelling is no longer my first reaction to any situation.

I have taken such deep breaths, I have nearly lost consciousness.

I have rolled my eyes (while my back was turned, of course!) so far that they have nearly gone up inside my head.

I have talked so slowly, and so lowly, I swear they have stopped breathing to better hear me.

my punishments are so well thought out and calculated, my children are actually fearful of consequences.

ashley has always been the one to push the limits when it comes to my threats.  she questions every single detail.  she learned a lesson the hard way one sunday.

she was being a complete stink.  merrill was home with peyton who wasn’t feeling well, so it was me, playing single mom at church and ashley was misbehaving.  I have a problem with certain behavior in the chapel and will not put up with it so she was warned to cut it out.  if she didn’t, we would clean out her room when we got home.  I would leave only her bed and clothing in her room.  but she pushed it.

(mind you the kid just had a birthday!!  birthday = lots of new, super fun stuff.)

“will you leave my light?  will you leave my curtains?”  a little giggle was added after each question.  “will you leave me door?  what about my carpet?”  I warned her again to stop, and she didn’t, so we left and sat in the foyer where she continued.

“seriously, will I have a light mom?”

she thought she was hilarious.

I warned her again, that if she kept it up, we would go home where she would have to sit in her empty room for the same amount of time that we would have been in sacrament meeting, and I didn’t want to go home without taking the sacrament.

but because she likes to push it, she kept it up.

now I had a choice: I could let her continue to act this way, and ignore it, not follow through with my punishment of having her sit in her empty room for the duration of sacrament meeting, or I could follow through, take her home, make her sit in her empty room for and hour and stare at all the emptiness.

I stuck to it.  she did not want to go.  we went down that hall, lynn leading out, me dragging ashley as she promised and cried that she would be good.  she begged and pleaded as I nearly pulled her arm out of its socket.  once we were outside, I lugged her up onto my hip and carried her like a sack of very uncooperative potatoes.

she was afraid now.  pretty sure she regretted her earlier behavior.

once we were home, I made her sit on the stairs as she watched me, merrill, lynn, and peyton, clean out her room and take everything downstairs to one of the unfinished bedrooms.  trip after trip past her with her beloved belongings, her face progressively fell sadder and sadder.  then, she got to sit in that empty room for an hour and fifteen minutes.  at the end of her sentence, I went in and explained to her just what she did, what consequence I laid out, and how I followed through with it.  I also explained to her that she would have chances to earn back her belongings everyday.

if she got out of bed without protesting and got ready for school without me nagging her, she would get to pick out one of her belongings.

if she came home from school, got her homework done without complaining, she would get to pick out another.

if she behaved well the rest of the evening, following rules, respecting others, and getting ready for bed without problems, she would get to pick out a third item before bedtime.

if she did other things that were pleasing during the day, there would be more chances to retrieve her belongings.

that first night, she had the chance to earn two belongings back, and I picked that number purposefully.  I knew she would want a doll or stuffed animal to sleep with, and I knew she would most definitely want her music to fall asleep to.  merrill and I would be the judges of how many she got to pick out.  she needed to be respectful of others for the rest of the evening (one) and get ready for bed without complaint (two).

she only earned one, because the kid has issues with boundaries, so she was sad to only have a doll to snuggle and no music.

the next day, you know she was doing everything she was expected to do, and the first thing she picked out of the basement was her cd player.

she still has stuff to earn back out of that basement, and that is because I am sticking to it!

I am so proud of myself.

I am not doing it alone, I pray for help everyday.  it is a huge help though, that I made the decision to change.

I also have to credit that one amazing friend, who shared what she had learned, not even knowing how awful I felt about where I was.  she was truly inspired.

the spirit in our home is not always the best, we all still need to improve how we react, but it is so much better.

it feels so good to not yell.

the 2012 outlook.

**before I really get into this post, I have to say that the information in italics  is all in fun, just a joke, not serious, playful in fashion, not in any way sincere, totally in jest.  I am not full of myself nor do I think I am awesome (all the time).  it was just a funny story, and a great lead-off into the things I would like to do in the year to come.  okay?  so don’t go reading on and get all huffy and call me a snob.  I am only kidding.**

(imagine that this picture is in italics, kay?)

awesome

it was suggested in our sacrament meeting on sunday, to write your goals (or resolutions, if you prefer) on a 3x5 card, and tape them to the mirror as a way to help you to remember them everyday.  I just happened to be sitting next to my best friend (who appreciates my sense of humor) and suggested to her that we had nothing to resolve this year, nothing that needed improving.

“we might as well go home and write, ‘continue being awesome’ on our 3x5 card.”

that earned a giggle.

we listened to this particular speaker end the meeting and I said, “okay, let’s go home and write our resolution on our card!”

right after that, the opening chords of our closing hymn were played by the organist.

you’ll never guess what our closing hymn was.

“be thou humble”.

“is this a sign?”  I was sincerely worried.  but only a little.

so I am not one to necessarily believe in “resolutions”.  I prefer the word “goals” and I also prefer this “self-improvement” process to be an on-going one, not one that happens once a year.

(apparently I prefer quotation marks as well.)

there are many things I find that I need to improve upon throughout the course of the year, and as I discover those things, I readjust as needed.  but there are things I would like to accomplish within the course of that same year, and make those my goals.

I prefer not to set outlandish goals, things that will set me up to fail, things that will be entirely out of my control, like “win the lottery”.  yeah, cause I have all power there.

I set realistic goals, things that I am truly interested and personally invested in, things I know I can do, and things in which I will have the support of my family and friends.

for example: I will never set a goal to not eat sugar.  that is too unrealistic for me.  I will also be lacking in the “support of my best friend” area, because that is something we enjoy doing together.  dude, I am so not sacrificing good times with my best friend, oh, and I don’t wanna quit sugar.  do I look that crazy?  I so wouldn’t last a day.  nope.  not a single day.

instead, I set a goal to eat sugar every day.  that way, I win.  every day.  and if I don’t, well, I really don’t feel like a failure.

so this year, for the very beginning of the year, I have two things (because small is so manageable) that I have set out to accomplish.

- crochet school.

- get better acquainted with my new camera friend.

okay, so somebody might look at me and say I already know something about both of those things.  yup, I do.  and I enjoy them, and I can get better at both!

see, they are things I like.  so there’s my motivation.  and like I said earlier, there is always room for improvement (no matter how awesome you are).  and they are totally realistic.

I will most likely add to this list as time goes on.  so the fun is guaranteed to continue.

I decided long ago that I was done looking at everything I hadn’t accomplished the year before, almost taking inventory of my failures, and starting the year trying to be something that I obviously really didn’t want to be, and hating every second of it, feeling every inch of failuredom (totally invented a word, should have put “invent a new word” on that list) and feeling like a sucky horrible person every day I didn’t do what I thought I might just pull off.

I also learned to not make those lists too long.  crazy long lists are also motivation killers.

last thing I want on my hands is a murder.

so there you have it.  I have picked the things that I am genuinely interested in, have motivation to further my skills and knowledge, and I am excited!  so they won’t take a year to do, but I am guaranteed to grow during the process.

so go ahead, give yourself permission to go and be awesome this year.

(and if you are interested in crochet school, you should do it with me.  I dare you!)

Evaluating…

I have been dreading this part of the year (aka, the beginning..) and the evaluation that comes with it.
I look back on last year, and all of those fabulous goals that I set at the beginning of it, and think, no, I KNOW that I was crazy, or under the influence of something, like too much sugar.
I set a goal that I would scrap 144+.
The + being the traditional layout I would do for every digital layout scrapped.
(Does anyone else hear the sound of failure?)
Ready for this last year’s tally?
No drum roll required….  really, don’t get excited, DON’T.
76
I didn’t even bother to count how many were traditional or how many of those are digital.
Why bother?
I think we all know that the majority are digi anyway.
So this year, I am setting realistic goals.  Goals such as: “Eat a piece (or two) of chocolate and/or candy everyday.”
See, I can do that!  Set a goal to not, and I might last one week, might.
So in the way of scrapping, I am setting a goal to get Peyton’s first year completed.  I got to two weeks (I think) and she will be three next month..
It would be a lot easier to scrap those pix if I didn’t cry every time I busted them out…  watery substance and scrapbook paper do not play well together.
I would also like to get the family pix scrapped from when I was preggers  with her…
Other than that, I am not putting a number to anything, just to get to a certain point in my scrapping.
Other goals (maybe) and some more de-junking and house-cleaning as far as blogging goes will soon follow…  I just need to find the motivation.
Changes are to come!

Only 96 more to go!
Lynn has been reading, and dong really well at it.
(Although I wish we had chosen another book besides, “Oh Say Can You Say”.  That was horrible, and about an hour of our lives we will never get back.)

A funny moment brought to you by Lynn & the Old Testament..

I have set a goal this year, to read the Old Testament.
It is a personal goal that I have set many times, but just can't seem to get through it.
I get to all those "begats", and my mind wanders.  I am determined to do it this year, and not only because it is the lesson matter in Sunday School for 2010, but because I want to understand the Gospel better.  How many times have I read the Book of Mormon?  Sheesh..  I should be a little more balanced.
I remember coming home from school most days to find my mom, sitting on the couch with her scriptures open.  If it wasn't her scriptures, it was a good book.  Her scriptures were always there on the end table.  She reads them every day still.
I believe that is where I got my love of reading.
I want my children to have that same example, that same desire planted within them, and that is another reason why I have set the goals that I have for this year.
Yesterday, I made my way through my daily tasks, got a few extras done, and sat down to really delve into the Old Testament.  I got past the "begats", wiped some sweat from my forehead, and heaved a big sigh, and continued on. ;)
Soon. the front door opened, and Lynn was home!!!
(We missed her terribly her first day back to school..  Ashley more than anybody, so we were excited that she was home again.)
We chatted about her day, and I started reading again.
She was interested.
"What are you reading mom?"
"The Old Testament."
"Is it interesting?"
"Yes..  it is the history of the earth before Christ came."
"Ohhh...  what are you reading about now?"
"Noah.  He is going to build the ark."
"Will you read some to me?"
And the reading commenced, but aloud this time.
I got to the part where it is said that God made a covenant with Noah, and I asked Lynn if she remembered what a covenant was.
"Isn't it like a rule?"
"I think that you are thinking of a commandment.  A covenant is a type of promise."
"Oh....  a promise with Heavenly Father.."
"Yes.  You will make covenants with Heavenly Father when you choose to be baptized.  Mom and dad made covenants with Heavenly Father when we were married in the temple too."
"What kind of things did you promise?"
"To love and take care of each other."
"Uh oh..  you guys broke that promise..  all you do is chase each other around and yell and scream and tease each other.  That isn't loving.."
I think I should make it clear that we have a new found love for playing tag in our house.  The layout begs for us to do it.  We have also already covered the fact that the hardwood is slippery and oh, so fun to slide on, and that only lends to the fun of tag.
We really are just having fun..  I promise!  We really do love each other..
Oh boy..  first the bruise to explain, and now this....

2010..

What will it bring?
I can think of many possibilities but I am mostly thinking about what I can do to make this another great year in my life and for my family.
I have been letting the goals in my head percolate for a while now, deciding which are truly important enough, worth the time and energy..
Here's just a smattering:
- Read more.  I have already started compiling a list of books for myself, and books to read with the girls.
- Run a 5k..  sometime this year.  It was going to be a goal before 30, but that is not going to happen at this point!
- Read the Old Testament this year..  Genesis always gets me.  "Begat..  begat..  begat.."  (Snore....)
- Be more consistent with my Yoga.  That might just help my shoulders to not feel the way they do now after shoveling two tons of snow.
- Read the Book of Mormon..  again. :)
- Actually have a calendar this year.  I survived 2009 without one..  barely.  I got to a point where I really should have had one, but thought I should just keep on going.  I made it this far, eh?  Why screw up a good thing? ;)  Actually, it will be a series of calendars..  one wherever I may need it, and I will keep them all correlated.
- Using said calendars, I will plan a month-to-month routine, getting ahead of myself so life is a little bit easier come Christmas 2010.
- I rocked it on my layout goal last year..  I really did.  I still haven't counted the final tally, I stopped when I hit the magical number.  This year, I will keep that same goal, but add to it in that, when I design a digital layout, I will have to do one traditionally as well.  So that is 144 + ?  Yikes.  Let's see if I can brag it up next year at this time.
- Dates.  Merrill and I have no excuses now.  We need to have more dates.  We just started late night soaks after we get the kiddos down and they are AWESOME!!  The adult talk time is priceless..  interruptions non-existent.  There is something about the day after those soaks that make me feel so much more connected to him.   Getting all dressed-up and going out together will probably have a similar outcome.
- Last year, I set a goal to be a better friend, and I am setting that goal again, as there is always room for improvement.  Birthday cards were sent off late and that should not happen when someone is trying to be a better friend!
I will also be continuing my photo a day project.  That was fun!
I have also been thinking awhile on my word for the year..  there were many prospects.  I got serious on two of them but it goes to enjoy.
I learned a lesson on Facebook from my uncle when I posted my status update during the busy last two weeks of December.  I posted that I was praying that I would get all the wrapping done, and that Peyton would stop the unwrapping.  My uncle commented that he "prayed that I would enjoy this most wonderful time of my life."
Then and there I knew that was to be the word of the year.
I need to sit back and relax a bit.  So what if that certain project doesn't turn out the way I intended?  And what am I going to do if I didn't get to do as many fun things this break/summer/weekend/day as I wanted to with the girls?  I should just enjoy what we did get to do and not fret about the details.
Ahhhhh...  there.
And so it begins.....
Happy new year everyone!!!!

Numbers..

Brooke asked about the numbers and then I got curious too..
Of 144 layouts (this year's goal) I have 106 done.
34 Traditional Layouts
72 Digital Layouts
That leaves 38 layouts to go...

It's June Baby!!!

Well, nearly :)
So I attempted to make my own June Desktop Background...It's all Mindy Terasawa.. love her designs!
I do have a layout, well a few, cookin' in my brain. I was all ready to take off and fly with them, but then I heard thunder.. and I lost all concentration.
We love a good storm around this house! Now it smells so unbelievably good....
Hey, and I must say I did pretty well catchin' up...
Let's see if my stellar math skills can process this one...
January 12 + February's 3..
15
Plus March's 0 :D
Still... 15!
15 plus April's 3 = 18...
And I got 28 done in May..
18 + 28 = 46
Hmmm... only 98 to go!

Organizing..

I know, I know..
I have 10 (ten) layouts to do before month's end, in order to reach my goal.. but I am having trouble getting inspired. I have more than enough sewing projects on my table, and more than enough pics to scrapbook.. but I am struggling.. so I decided to clean out.
I am fighting the urge to re-paint too...
But here's one of my favorite ways to organize my scraps.. and if you know me, I save ALL of my scraps.
I take an ordinary file folder, and trace the shape of the tab on the folder on the little tab that comes on the end of so many manufacturer's paper now days.. cut it out, and glue the baby down.. I like to use my Xyron sticker maker. That way, I have all my scraps organized by manufacturer, and in My Mind's Eye's case, their different lines :)
Don't forget.. one more day to enter!!

Thou shalt not covet..

..oh, but how I am..
I talked to Christie today on the phone.. normal, everyday kinda talk. I was telling her how I was doing pretty well on my "clean house Monday", trying to get that trend going again.. a goal for the year.. I told her I was almost done.. just dreading the vacuuming.. it was time for the kids to get out, I was getting Ash and Pey all ready to go when the phone rings again.. it was Christie.
"Don't go out in this, I'll get Lynn.. It's still snowing and I was going to go and get my kids.."
What a sweetie, eh?!
So Pey and Ash were standing by the window, waiting.. (I have another cute story about this, another time, perhaps?) Here's where my pic for the day fits in perfectly..When Christie shows up.. another sweet member of her family carried, yes CARRIED my ill shodden (that means shoes on the feet were not fitting for the white stuff falling from the sky and sticking to the cold ground..) child from the Kindergarten door to the cross walk.. thanks Hailey!!
But, it doesn't end there..
Christie was getting, what I thought to be my child, who I was prepared to carry up the driveway and into the house, because I had not gotten around to shoveling (see clean house Monday doesn't include the out of doors unless time permits..) but no.. she had in hand her most awesome and incredible DYSON!! She let me borrow her most awesome, most suck-y, eye-opening experience vacuum! Let me tell you...
I am trying to not be a covet-er.. the ten commandments are awesome..
I vacuumed my house.. most rooms twice. It was horrific, yet strangely satisfying at the same time, to see all the crap that my non-sucky vacuum leaves behind in it's non-sucky job..
I was sufficiently disgusted. And that was just my craft room.. berber carpet.. where does all of that stuff hide in berber carpet?
Thanks Christie!! You made my day, and I promise, I will give you back your vacuum tomorrow.. first thing!
And Mer.. you saw just what I want.. ;) 15 more days?!

A New Year...

2009..
It's here.. 2008 is officially gone, in the past. So many things have happened in this last year, some I am not ready to let go of, but I am excited to see what the future has in store for my little family.. for my extended family too!
I have bee thinking long and hard about my goals, for the past year and things I want to accomplish this new year. I have been doing this since October. I busted out my little notebook, the trusty one I keep where I will always see it, in my craft room. I like to evaluate where I am. I did alright last year. Most of my goals hit a hard spot, that was when Peyton was born, and most of my goals have to do with getting back on track..
Just a few examples:
-EXCERCISE!! Fitted black skirt, need I say more? (Go here if you have a similar goal.. :) I think every woman does..)
-Read B.O.M., again.
-Get back to Monday being cleaning day..
-Scrapbook 144 layouts this year (I'll keep track of my progress on the other blog..)
-SAVE more $.. better..
-Be a better friend!!
I have also been thinking about my word for the year.. Jaclyn challenged us all last year; Ali Edwards has had some reminders too.. I've been thinking for a while now. I am still not settled on one.. can I have a word for each room in my home?..
We did nothing of too much excitement this year for New Year's Eve.. no nursing = my "Great (not so great really) Aunt Scarlet" coming for a visit that has been on again, off again for two weeks now.. I wasn't feeling too good. Am starting to feel it again right.. now.. We stayed in, made homemade pizza, we think we have Zucca figured out (very yummy, order the mahgahrita..) and watched a couple of movies, let the kids do some noise makers, at 9 pm, and sent them to bed. I crocheted a new hat for Peyton and we stayed up long enough to greet the new year at midnight, then we crashed. I have to say that I am thankful it wasn't spent the way it was last new year's eve.. in the InstaCare, with a three year old who stuck a popcorn kernel up her right nostril.. not so fun.
We let our celebration get going today, when all of Mer's family could be together. We played Rock Band, Family Guy trivia, and Catch Phrase. Yummy food was involved, and some good laughs, as usual.Me singing and Joe on the drums... yes, a pic of Joe on a blog, mine, because I can!
Sophie during her crazy awesome drum solo.. this lefty rocked it!
Even Dixon got in on the rockin' action.. no pic of Darlene?!Hottie-Body Merrill..
And Jaclyn said she sucked...
Peyton even got in on some vocals...
We are now enjoying a little slumber party with cute little Bubba-Gos (aka Sophie).
Oh, yeah, I am doing "a picture a day" too this year.. it looked like so much fun when Jacks did it last year, I didn't want to start a month late, so I decided that I'll just start this year. :)
I guess I'll aim for taking my tree down sometime this weekend.. I am having a hard time giving in to the fact that Christmas is really done and gone.. it makes me sad! I miss it. I knew for sure I was a hormonal woman yesterday when I was watching "Elf", and at the very end, when James Caan finally starts singing, and Santa's sleigh flies over the crowd, I dang near cried!! Sheesh! I really am hormonal, aren't I?!
