Weekend in pictures..

We had a great weekend at home..
Saturday was a busy day..  okay, busy is an understatement, but it was the good kind of busy.
We had a baptism, a birthday party, and a baby shower.
Someone thought that the glue stick was lip gloss..

Not so much..

Sunday was a good day, despite Merrill having to work...  I had my lesson which I was pleased with.  I was even more pleased with how well the girls behaved in Sacrament meeting..  even better than when dad is there!!  We did miss him though..
We made up for it that evening.
We made popcorn the good family fun way..  with the air popper and melted butter.
It was quite magical to Peyton.  I wish I would have gotten a picture of her face when the kernels started to pop.
Lynn made us some brownies with her Easy Bake oven.
They were yummy..

And so was she, bringing them to us like a little cute waitress..

We waited to hear any minute that Promise was having the baby..  they had to speak in their ward, and with the boys, she went into labor during their talks (with James, Ken was speaking in Stake Conference and with Levi, she was speaking and having contractions).
We spent the day Monday with Grammy, Randee, Chace, and Josh.

Promise and the boys were supposed to be there, but wouldn't you know..  she went in to labor early that morning.
Abby arrived yesterday afternoon. :)
5 pounds 15 ounces and 18 inches long.
She is cute!
We are debating in this house who she looks more like..  Merrill and I see James in her but Lynn sees Levi.  They are so excited to have a little sister!  Hopefully Levi has changed his mind, and will allow her to live in the house. ;)
Family Home Evening was fun..
Especially with Ashley...

She is crazy..
Lynn made us sugar cookies with her little oven.
(She claims she will be baking my birthday cake as well..)
Today, we have been coloring away and are waiting for our bread dough to rise the second time so we can bake it...  laundry is in full swing too.
I am tempted to go to Costco and pick up my birthday present...
We have loved the long weekend!

Great to be 8..

Can we really be this old?  I mean, really?!
Lynn turns 8 this year which means a big event will commence in her little life, her baptism (if she so chooses..  and she is pretty excited about it.).
We got to attend the "Great to be 8" fireside a couple of weeks ago to see what it would be like.
She was on cloud nine!
It only got better as the stake primary gave her a balloon, a special book for that special day, and cake on top of that?  (Merrill and I really liked that cake..)
Our Family Home Evening lessons this year will focus more on what this means.  They will also include a lot of scripture finding and reading..  she is in Senior primary now...
So really..  are we really here?..  now?..  already?..
She was just my baby!

January 15th..

January 14th..

We're going on a bear hunt...

This picture has a story, and it also necessitates an explanation..  especially if you look at that expression on Ashley's face...
Here it is:
Grammy (my mom) has shared a book with the grand kids since they were very small.  It is their favorite!  The way that the story has evolved over the years has been due to two factors: 1) the ages of her grandchildren and 2) the gender of her grandchildren.
She started out with a streak of girls.  Four girls to be exact.  Then, four boys quickly followed.  The reading of "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" went from sitting on grammy's lap, and making the sounds as they pretended to walk through mud, tall grass, water, etc., to going throughout the house acting the book out.  Grammy would even hide a stuffed bear in the basement to be the bear when they got to the cave.  Then the boys got bigger, and guns were added to the arsenal of playthings that the toy room holds.
Then the boys learned the art of the gun fight.
Then they boys learned the awesomeness of the hunt.
"We're Going on a Bear Hunt:" changed for the better, if you ask me.
The other day, one of the days that Ashley was lucky enough to spend the day at Grammy's (and with 3 of her male cousins at that), she learned to enjoy "Bear Hunt" in this new fashion.
Mom told me that Ashley would wear her dress-up, carry her baby on one hip, and hold her gun in the other hand.  My kind of gal...
Grammy hides the bear somewhere in the house, and then yells (but she really can't yell, so I don't know what to call it...) "Hey!!  I just heard a bear growl!!!  I think it's downstairs (or upstairs)...  you guys have gotta go and get it!"
Then, the massive number of little ones come running from their waiting places, guns in hand, off to hunt that bear.  They whisper for only a few minutes, then you hear the excitement, gunshot sound effects follow, and a few minutes later, someone emerges with the fresh kill on their shoulder, with cousins in tow.
They love it.
I loved it so much, that after my triumphant trip to Harmon's, we went to Dilly Dally's (a dollar store) and bought enough dollar guns to arm our whole family.  Peyton even got a knife with her pistol, very useful if we needed to (pretended to) skin the bear.
That night, we played the new version of "Bear Hunt".  It then turned into hunting each other, thanks to Merrill.. then went back to hunting the bear.  We had to have one more hunt after prayers, but before bed.
It is quite the good time..  but even more important, we are making some awesome memories!

Want a laugh?

Here's the first in a series of laughs for you....
We have been out to Roy 3 days this week alone, seeing Grammy, having her tend and having play dates with cousins, and I hope she has enjoyed the visits as much as my girls have..  (enjoy your "day off" tomorrow mom!!)
Being out n Roy has it's advantages, so I planned a trip to Harmon's.  It is their case lot sale, and I need a case lot sale.
I will brag for a second, noting that one of the items on sale were Kellogs products, 4 for $5.  I will also note that I had two different types of coupons, one for $1 off of two boxes of cereal, and another for $2 dollars off of three boxes.
I paid 50 cents per box of Frosted Flakes...
Aren't you proud of me?
On to the laughs..
We were making our way into the store, when Lynn got upset.  One of the Reese's peanut butter cups, and it was a big one, not a miniature one (we Pitcher's do take our Reese's serious) were missing from her bag-O treats from grammy's house.
"Did Ashley eat it?" she asked.
"I am not sure Lynn."  and that was a lie, a mommy lie, because I knew, I didn't want to finger the guilty party,  He was so cute..
"If she eats my other one, I will be so pissed..."
And although my legs kept moving, and I was still making my way toward the front of the grocery store with my three children safely in tow, I froze inside.
My seven year old just used the word pissed.  It sounded almost cute with her little lisp, the lisp that is created with her new gap in the bottom row of her teeth.
"What was that you just said?"
"I will be so pissed-off if Ashley steals my other Reese's and eats it."
"Lynn, we don't say that.  It just isn't appropriate... okay?"
"Okay mom."
That went easier than I thought.  I was expecting the pout because she did something and got reprimanded for it, the pout that usually follows one of those talks.
"Where did you hear that anyway?"
"Dad."
"Well..  we'll have to talk with dad about the words he chooses to say won't we?"
"Yeah mom!!  You should do that!"
So we went about our awesome deal-finding..  I won't tell you how many cases I came home with, you should still be so wowed with my 4 boxes of cereal at 50 cents a box, you shouldn't need further impressing.
We came home, prepared our dinner, and sat as a family to eat it.
Just as we were all digging in to our baked potatoes (side note: we are attempting to cut down on the meat we eat, and these particular baked potatoes were sans bacon bits, I missed the bacon bits...)
I  broached the subject.
"Merrill, Lynn and I need to talk to you about something serious."
He got a look of alarm on his face and carefully asked, "What?"
"Lynn, do you want to tell daddy?"
Her eyes got wide, and she shook her head.
I continued.  "Lynn said a bad word today."
He shot a glance at her.
I continued.  "She said that she heard you say it."
The alarmed look only increased, and he looked back an forth at me and then her multiple times as he asked, "Which one?!"
I asked Lynn if she would tell him, and her alarmed look surpassed his, and was added with another shake of her head.
He was dying.
So I told him.
"She said 'pissed'."
Relief set in on one end of the table, but where Lynn sat, she was waiting for the reprimand to come from her father.
"I am so pissed that you freaked me out like that!  That wasn't that bad..." he said.
And as I gasped at his response, he laughed.
What a good example.
He did tell Lynn that that isn't a very good word, to not use it, and he will try (try being the operative word here..) to not use words like those anymore.
But I think that Lynn really learned that her father is a hypocrite.
He went on to further her learning for the evening by telling her that if she were ever asked that question by her mother again, even if it were his mouth that she heard such language, and she copies it, she is to answer her mother's question with, "I heard it from Schwartz".
At the end of his directions to her, Lynn looked up from her plate with a confused look and said, "But I don't know anyone named Schwartz!"

Sunday night snacking: Scones and Honeybutter

When I wandered out to the freezer to get the breadsticks to accompany our spaghetti Sunday, my eyes fell on the strawberry freezer jam.
Before I knew it, I was craving scones.

Scone Dough

1 quart buttermilk  (you can also use milk + vinegar or lemon juice if you don't have any buttermilk on hand.  The ratio is 1 cup of milk to 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice.)
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons soda
2 eggs
1/2 cup warm water
2 tablespoons yeast
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons oil
flour

Start by dissolving the yeast with a tablespoon of sugar in the warm water.  Mix the remaining sugar, baking powder, soda, and salt in a bowl.  In a large bowl, mix the buttermilk, eggs, and oil, then add the yeast and dry mixtures.  Mix well.  Start by adding six cups of flour, one cup at a time, and mix until smooth.  Add more four as needed until you get a smooth, lightly sticky dough.  (I stopped counting after eight cups, the recipe didn't state an amount of flour to use.)
Let the dough rise, and refrigerate until ready to use.
When ready to cook, roll out to 1/2 inch thickness on a floured surface, cut into squares, and let rise again.  Cook in oil until golden brown (about 350 degrees) turning once.
(This dough can keep in your fridge for a week.  Just cover it!)

We didn't have any honey butter in the house (I think we ran out when we had pulled pork last week..) but thanks to the good old internet, and a neighbor who loaned us some honey, we made our own honey butter.

Honey Butter

1 pound of butter (softened a bit)
1/4 cup honey
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
dash of salt

Mix your butter on a low speed to get it soft to make the incorporation of the other ingredients easier.  Add the remaining ingredients and mix all together until smooth and chill before using.

We served ours with the freezer jam and honey butter.
At this point, I think we will have these again tonight!! :D
